MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The number keeps rising at an alarming rate, there are now 12 homicides in Memphis just 13 days into 2016.
On Wednesday police said Tamara Davis who was killed with her boyfriend, Joe Fifer was pregnant.
They were robbed and shot over the weekend at the Tulane Apartments.
Their killer is still on the loose.
Rewind back to last year and MPD said there were only three homicides.
Many say where we are today is unacceptable.
“I was telling some of my friends, some of my neighbors I miss him.
Sylvester Chillis said he knew one of the victims, 49-year-old Patrick Couch, for decades.
“I called him Boo. Boo- Boo,” he said.
Their friendship was cut short on New Year’s Day when Couch was found shot to death in his driveway on South Fourth Street.
His murder was one of 12 recorded to this date from Whitehaven, the Univeristy area, Binghampton, Frayser and Raleigh.
“It’s just ridiculous, it’s ridiculous.”
Three of the victims were still in school.
Tuesday night Trezevant High School students huddled together to remember 18-year-old Ryan Gilliam killed during a robbery.
“It has to stop, it has to stop now,” said Delvin Lane with the 901 BLOC Squad.
Lane told WREG he use to be a gang leader who now makes it his mission to stop the violence on the streets by working hand in hand with those who create it.
He’s hoping change will soon come.
“We have a big meeting coming up in a couple days. It’s not gonna be disclosed, we can’t tell anybody where it’s gonna be at. We’re calling all OG’s and street leaders to the table because they can make things happen in their own communities.”
Change in the community is something Chillis and other loved ones of victims are hoping for and soon.
“There’s a piece missing and I don’t think I’ll grab hold until a little while.”
A warrant has been issued in one of these cases but police still need your help tracking down the suspects in the others.
