MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are on the hunt for three men who opened fire on a group of people walking into a Downtown Memphis apartment building.

Police said some people were walking down Madison Avenue early Sunday morning when they noticed a car following them.

The victims told MPD they asked the three men in the car what they were doing, and the men didn’t answer.

Instead, they apparently pulled out a gun and fired several shots in front of Pressbox Lofts.

Police said one woman got hurt in the foot from the shattered glass but is expected to be okay.

Those who live there were uncomfortable talking about what happened. Some tenants did say they heard the shots echo through the building, noticed the boarded-up door and several holes in the wall from the bullets.

“I have to walk back and forth to school every day,” said Rachel Min. “I’m from Hawaii. I just moved here last year.”

Min goes to school and lives right where this all happened. She is on edge.

“Living here has been a little different. You definitely get approached by a lot of strangers, which is not always the most comfortable situation,” she said.

The apartment manager told WREG he’s aware of the random act of violence and said he’s working with police, beefing up security and adding more surveillance cameras.

“I don’t walk around fearing for my life down here,” said Ben Joyce, who spends time downtown.

He and others downtown Monday said unfortunately, nowhere is immune to crime.

“Any downtown you have to be careful. I don’t think it’s just Memphis,” said a downtown resident who didn’t want to give his name.

The Downtown Memphis Commission said it “is aware of the shooting that occurred early Sunday morning. We are glad that everyone is safe, and no one was hurt too badly. Our downtown security team will continue to work closely with MPD and other private security teams in the downtown district to curb these random acts. We are confident that, with the help of strategically placed Downtown surveillance cameras and security presence, MPD will conduct a thorough investigation.”

The suspects were last seen driving east on Madison in a white Dodge Charger.
