MEMPHIS, Tenn. —  Despite the cold temperatures, friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Mrs. Frances Dancy Hooks.

The funeral for the wife of the late civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin Hooks took place Friday at the Greater Middle Baptist Church on Knight Arnold.

Mrs. Hooks was a well-known educator and philanthropist in Memphis.

She co-founded the Memphis Volunteer Placement program and helped recruit students for some of the country’s best private boarding schools.

Congressman Steve Cohen, former Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr., Former Superintendent Carol Rawls Johnson, Bill Gibbons, and several Shelby County Commissioners were all in attendance.

Mrs. Hooks was 88-years-old.
