DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — After Super Tuesday, many states are packing up their voting machines — but not Mississippi, whose Democratic and Republican primaries are not until next week.
“I’m thinking we’ll have a decent turnout. Yes, I am. I’m preparing for one anyway,” DeSoto County Democratic Party Chairman Samuel Williams said.
“I was really thrilled that so many Republicans voted. Of course, I’m excited that we’re going to hopefully have a big turnout in Mississippi,” DeSoto County Republican Party Chairwoman Ellen Jernigan said.
The Mississippi primaries are next Tuesday.
Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich spent Super Tuesday in Mississippi, already trying to drum up support. Like other candidates, he also visited Memphis last week.
Williams is not sure campaigning this late in the game in Mississippi will make a big difference.
“If I was a candidate, I wouldn’t spend a whole bunch of money or time there, because I think just about everybody’s got their minds made up,” Williams said.
Jernigan spoke with WREG over the phone Wednesday and said she knows folks throughout the state supporting each of the different candidates.
“I want us to win so badly in November that I think we have to really be careful about the primary and really be able to hold hands and sing ‘Hallelujah’ into the general election,” Jernigan said.
On Super Tuesday, Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders each nabbed wins. On the Republican side, Trump, Cruz and Rubio experienced wins as well.
