MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People living in Memphis say the trash problem is out of control.

Some areas are being referred to as “dumping sites.”

One group is taking matters into their own hands. They’re cleaning up areas trashed along Raleigh-Millington Road.

“It’s a real eyesore, you’re driving back here on Raleigh-Millington, it looks like a dump. Literally like a dump,” said Dempsey Sailes.

Sailes told us when people drive along Raleigh- Millington Road, they throw trash out the window.

“We found cell phones, wine bottles, soda cans, baby diapers, tires. You name it, it’s there,” he explained.

Sammy Harris said someone tossed tires behind his business on Raleigh-Millington Road.

“Blight everywhere around here,” he said.

The Twin Lakes Neighborhood Association is taking action by helping Memphis City Beautiful with its mission to clean up areas where blight is present.

“Approximately every three months, we do a major cleanup,” Harris said.

They had two cleanup projects so far.

Although it helps some, many get upset when people litter all over again after the cleanup.

“Very frustrating because when the wind blows, that trash comes from everywhere,” Harris said.

Sailes said people in the neighborhood are also considering raising $25,000 for Skycop cams to help catch the people littering.

They received a grant to purchase safety cones and vests.

The grant was from the Shelby County Board of Commissioners.
