MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Cameras captured the chaos as Millington Central High School students trudged through the flood waters Thursday afternoon.

“Look at that guy carrying his girlfriend. He’s a champion,” someone was heard as saying.

The jokes didn’t trump the concern though.

Parents we talked to weren’t happy to see their kids in the high-rising water.

“I don’t think it’s good,” said grandmother Dora Kelly.

“Do you think it’s unsafe? ”

“It is! It is!” she replied.

“You had to get all the way down the road to get to the buses. They moved them all the way up. So we came out this door and you sprinted 150 yards all the way down to the buses,” Jaryn Hogan told us.

He said staff tried to corral him and classmates around the trouble spots, but it was too chaotic.

Everyone was just trying to get to dry land or their cars as fast as they could.

“There were certain spots by the ditch over near the Baker Community Center where it was hard to walk because water was flowing directly against you.”

City crews said Millington got 2.9 inches of rain within a half an hour, causing flash flooding.

They said their drains worked to clear the water pretty quickly, but to prevent this from happening again, they’re working to improve the drainage system by expanding lines

Students said they are still recovering from yesterday’s chaos.

“My shoes are actually still soaking wet at the house. I walked in and took them off and I was furious. I was unhappy. I was like really? Come on!”
