MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dramatic video shows a man shooting at a teenager.
“It was like pow pow pow,” a witness described.
“It’s just unspeakable,” Bezumeh Tessema told WREG.
Police said Willis Lee was the driver in a white car seen in the video pulling into the Shell gas station on McLemore Avenue.
Lee allegedly told police he spotted a group of guys in his car that was stolen.
“I just think people should make better decisions before they draw their weapons,” Willie Wright said.
The gunshots hit a 16-year-old boy in the hip and shattered glass in the shopping center.
WREG tracked down Willis’ mother Sunday, who said her son is the real victim.
“They had got the car back one time and they went to get a wrecker to pull the car. Whoever had stole the car came back and got it again,” Deloris Lee said.
However, Lee said what her son is accused of doing is wrong.
Police said it was surveillance video from the store that was key to solving the crime.
Store owners are working closely with police during the investigation. One owner told WREG they have recently upgraded their surveillance system and stopped selling beer in an effort to keep bad guys away.
“Just for the business protection, for the customer protection, for the community service,” Tessema explained.
Tessema said what happened in the video outside of his store is ridiculous and no child should have to know what it is like to be shot.
“It’s not worth it,” Tessema said. “It’s not worth it. It’s not really the people at this age — just there is a lot of bright future in the — you know ahead. And just cutting short like this it doesn’t make sense.”
