MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s something many women are talking about; making the transition from relaxed hair to natural hair.
“I think the importance of women embracing their natural hair really comes from a deep rooted self esteem issue. As little girls we’ve always been taught that we need to straighten our hair,” said Yvette Granger, the organizer of Natural Hair Divinity Pageant.
That’s why Yvette Granger started the Natural Hair Tableau event.
This year it’s featuring the Miss Natural Hair Divinity Pageant for women 18-years-old and up.
For so long, women have struggled to get their hair straight but this pageant teaches women that natural hair is also beautiful.
“I thought that it would be a great idea if we can take an average woman that’s wearing her natural and allow her to showcase her natural hair, and give her accolades for being herself,” Granger said.
Christy Simmons is one of the contestants.
Simmons started going natural five years ago.
“It was a lot of pressure to have natural hair. I myself have never been so natural as I am now but growing up as my mom was a hairstylist, I always have straight hair,” she said.
Simmons said no matter what natural style she wears, it’s about confidence and inner building, something she hopes to teach young girls.
“I thought it would be a great outlet for myself to express myself in a different way,” Simmons said.
The event will feature an 80’s addition.
It’s at Perignon’s Banquet Hall on Coleman Road in Raleigh.
Doors open at 5 p.m at Perignon’s Banquet Hall Saturday. It’s $15 in advance.
