CLEVELAND — A Cleveland police officer did more than just fight crime last week; he went out of his way to make sure a young boy was made whole again after his prized collection of Pokemon cards was stolen.
Nine-year-old Bryce has been collecting the cards for about three years, and he enjoys trading them with friends, WJW reported. When he was walking to a friend’s house last week, a kid stole the binder with the cards right out of his hands and ran away.
Police found the culprit and the binder, but the cards weren’t all there.
Luckily one of the officers on the case, James Grotenrath, understood how much the cards meant to Bryce.
“I grew up with Pokemon, I loved Pokemon as a kid and I would be heartbroken too if my cards were taken from me,” Grotenrath told WJW.
To help mend Bryce’s broken heart, Grotenrath went home and dug up his old collection — which included a very rare banned card — to give to the 9-year-old.
“It’s a priceless item, but it’s better to see someone else smile, and in my book, like my partner says, it’s just happy to see a citizen smile instead of always frowning upon us and looking the other way,” Grotenrath said.
And Bryce was definitely left smiling.
“I think they’re really nice and they help out the world,” he said.
As for the kid who stole the cards, police said he got a “talking to,” but no charges were filed.
