Caught on Camera!

A grocery store employee was bashed in the head and sent to the hospital while trying to stop some shoplifters in Highland Heights.

It happened Tuesday at Montesi’s Supermarket on Summer Avenue.

Manager Vicky Marcum said she was tipped off when she saw two women with large purses.

Marcum said they walked to the beer aisle, took $20 worth of beer and stuffed the alcohol into their bags.

Employees said they tried to leave with the beer and a can of Glade.

“She was already past the point of sale with the beer,” said Marcum. “I said, ‘if you will open your purse, let’s see what you got.'”

The woman apparently refused and started to walk away.

“The other [woman] takes off, and she’s running out the deli,” said Marcum.

Another camera showed an employee following her.

He tried to stop her from leaving when all of a sudden a guy barged in and bashed the employee in the head.

Someone then pulled out pepper spray to break it all up.

“He has got ten stitches in his forehead,” said Marcum. “It looked like a gun, but I don’t know if it was a screw driver. Somebody said it was a screwdriver.”

Police finally got there and gave one woman a misdemeanor citation while Marcum said the woman wearing floral and the man booked it in a black Chevy truck almost running over customers and employees in the parking lot.

Marcum said what’s sad is these are frequent customers, and they’re stealing from their neighborhood grocery store.

“[The owner] bends over backwards for people around here. You know, he tries to cut down the prices for them,” said Marcum.

In the end, the thieves only got away with the air freshener.

Marcum said she took down the license plate: TN tags 790-79A.
