MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than $30,000 is being donated to help send children to summer camp in Memphis.
This comes after Mayor Jim Strickland asked people in the community to support teens who can’t accord camp.
More than 1,000 students in Memphis are already registered for summer camps offered at more than 20 community centers this summer.
The cost is $162 to send a child.
Because so many people in the community stepped up, hundreds of students who couldn’t afford it before are now able to join in on the fun.
“We’ve been getting phone calls. The response is awesome. It really lets people know that Memphians do care about our community,” said Toni Holmon-Turner, the Public Affairs Manager for Division of Parks and Neighborhoods.
She said this is the first time, she remembers seeing this kind of support during the summer.
