The Shelby County Health Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes, after discovering the first insects with the West Nile Virus this year.
The Health Department said the first positive mosquito pool was found in the 38116 zip code.
Since March, crews have treated standing bodies of water throughout Shelby County.
Now, the spraying begins.
But, as Dr. Tyler Zerwekh with the Health Department explained, there are things you can do to help.
The 4D’s for mosquito protection:
- DEFEND yourself by using insect repellent. Follow label instructions.
- DRESS in long sleeves and pants, loose and light colored clothing when outdoors.
- DUSK/DAWN stay indoors during this time to avoid mosquitoes when they are most active
- DRAIN standing water and install or repair window screens
