MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former Memphis City Schools Superintendent and Mayor Dr. Willie Herenton is mourning the loss of the mother.
Ruby Lee Harris passed away Friday morning after a lengthy illness.
Miss Harris raised the former mayor and his sister in South Memphis where he had dreams of becoming a boxer.
He eventually became the city’s first African-American school superintendent and mayor.
Miss Harris held the Bible for her son five consecutive times as Dr. Herenton was sworn in.
Funeral services are pending.
Ruby Lee Harris was 93 years old.
