MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer is recovering after he was attacked while trying to arrest a man in Midtown.

Police say the incident happened outside the Cash Saver grocery store at Madison & Avalon around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to an affidavit, 29-year-old Michael Greene was outside the store, trying to sell an EBT card.

Employees asked him to leave, when he refused, they called the police.

When the officer arrived, he tried to talk with Greene — but said he was acting nervous.

The officer then patted Greene down and found a lead pipe in his waistband.

When the officer started putting handcuffs on him, police say Greene started fighting back and hit the officer in the face with the handcuffs.

Police say Greene was able to punch the officer several times and even threatened to kill him.

Darryle Tate, a Marine, was nearby and stepped in to help the officer gain control over Greene, use a stun gun on him, and take him into custody.

Greene is charged with attempted second degree murder and resisting official detention.

The officer suffered cuts and bruises to his face, elbows and knees.
