MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been arrested for impregnating a girl when she was only 13 years old.

Memphis Police first started investigating the case in March when they received a complaint from the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services.

The DCS told them a 14-year-old gave birth to a child, and the father was a 32-year-old.

Police talked to the girl’s mother, who identified the father as James Coleman, now 33, whom she said is a family acquaintance and was spending time with her daughter.

The mother also said Coleman was supporting the child financially.

The victim then told police she and Coleman started having sex when she was 13.

She said she first told him she was 16 but said Coleman continued having sex with her even after she told him her real age.

The victim gave birth to the child in May 2015, when she was 14, and she told police in March she and Coleman were still sexually involved.

Police could not find Coleman at the time, but they have now found him.

He was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of aggravated statutory rape and one count of domestic assault causing bodily harm.
