KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The review agregate website Angie’s List has settled a class action lawsuit worth $1.4 million.
Jannell Moore, the plaintiff in the case, said she hired a contractor based off of positive reviews, KSHB reported.
It was only when she went to write and publish her own review that she was able to see other negative reviews, the lawsuit filed last year said.
She claimed if she had been able to see those reviews she would have never hired the company.
In addition to hiding negative reviews, the lawsuit claimed Angie’s List ranks the company based on how much money they shell out.
Anyone who had a membership with the company between 2009 and 2016 can file a claim to receive a $5 or $10 refund for the cost of their membership.
They may also file their own claim before October 24.
Angie’s List released the following statement to the media:
Our mission is to connect consumers with high quality service providers, while striving for transparency and awareness. We believe we have done this, and the proposed settlement is not an admission of any wrongdoing. We would rather pursue a settlement at this time in a manner that provides a benefit to our members instead of incur the costs associated with continued litigation. The Court has preliminarily approved the settlement, and final resolution is subject to the Court’s final approval. Angie’s List cannot make any further comment on the litigation at this time.
