MEMPHIS, Tenn.–Yellow crime tape draped in Memphis neighborhoods is all too common. The city’s on pace for a dubious record, the most homicides in a year. Monday’s death brings the total to 151.
“There are a lot of shots that are happening, that people don’t call police because people become desensitized,” said councilman Berlin Boyd.
You hear police and city leaders talk about Blue Crush and community policing now councilman
Boyd wants to try a new approach it’s called shot spotter.
“If we know that guns are being shot we can identify the person, we can take that person off the street, and remove one more guns off the street,” added Boyd.
Police say as of August 12th there were 134 homicides in Memphis.
Now it’s 151,17 homicides in 17 days.
Memphis police says victims know the suspect more than half the time meaning there’s little they can do. They say it is up to citizens to call police.
“The citizens are going to have to communicate with each other better and put the guns down, guns are getting in the wrong hands,” said Major Caroline Mason.
Police say you should stay proactive but preventing homicides starts with those living in the neighborhoods speaking up.
