MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Expect to see a sea of pink on Saturday because the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is tomorrow.
Race preps are well underway, a very exciting time as participants pick up their registration packets and get their t-shirts. However, we sat down with survivors who tell us this a very emotional time every year.
“Most of it is joy that there are so many of still here,” said Carolyn Furlotte a 20 year survivor. “So there’s a lot of emotion even after 20 years, emotion is very close to the service but for me there is no sadness in that emotion.”
“The only sadness is for those we didn’t help soon enough and be able to save them,” said Furlotte.
But Susan G Komen Race for the Cure is saving so many more women today.
Carolyn Furlotte found herself among the sea of pink after being diagnosed at 47/ Today she is cancer free and has been volunteering for Race for the Cure for 19 years.
Music, cheers and plenty of pink, something everyone looks forward to on race day.
“I’m usually very teary eyed the morning of it’s very emotional for us, we’re proud, we’re strong, we’re very faithful and committed to what were doing everyday,” Dana Mann 2016 Race Chair & 5 year Survivor.
Mary Wilkerson was diagnosed with Breast Cancer two months ago. She tells me shad a very small spot of cancer and is thankful to be a survivor.
“I’ve been volunteering for the race and been around a lot of survivors, so it’s really made things easy for me because I saw that you can survive and it’s not a death sentence,” said Wilkerson. “It’s amazing for me. It’s definitely a relief.”
Registration is at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday at the ticker booths in front of Auto Zone Park. The race starts at 9 a.m.
