MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman has been charged with taking a child from a Memphis daycare without permission.
Police say 18-year-old Mya Lakes abducted a child from a daycare in Frayser Thursday afternoon.
Lakes is charged with kidnapping, neglect and child abuse.
But Sharandi Jennings said you wouldn’t have guessed any of that from talking to her.
“First she act like she was scared of the dog, and then I told her that my dog doesn`t bite.”
Thursday night, the two had a pretty casual conversation outside Jennings’ Frayser apartment complex. One thing they didn’t discuss was the fact the police were searching for Lakes after they say she signed out 7-month-old A’Laleh Fentress from Elite Academy Daycare using the mother’s name. She then reportedly left that child on a doorstep at Jennings’ complex for around two hours.
When police showed up, Jennings said Lakes just started walking away.

They eventually caught up with her and charged her with aggravated kidnapping and child endangerment. WREG has learned months before these charges, Lakes was in trouble with the law in North Carolina.
She was arrested for stealing a car back in August. She also has a warrant out for her arrest stemming from a hit and run. In that case, she was also charged with failure to stop, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and not having an operator’s license.
