MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are still searching for a man wanted on felony charges who reportedly hit two squad cars then took off.
Officers said it all started when they tried to take Billy Ray Sanlin into custody in the 2900 block of Third Street around 9 a.m. Thursday.
A tussle ensued resulting in the officers reaching through the window in an effort to keep the suspect from putting the vehicle in gear. It was during this encounter that one of the officers grabbed and removed the suspect’s gun from his waistband.
Despite their efforts, police said Sanlin was able to put the car in reverse and struck one of the police cruisers. With one of the officers still halfway inside the car, the suspect reportedly continued to hit the vehicle before striking a second cruiser and fleeing the scene.
A passenger was able to get out of the car before he took off.
Officers chased the vehicle to the 2400 block of West Ball where the suspect crashed his car, but continued on foot.
There were two other people inside the car at the time of the crash.
A massive police search utilizing an MPD helicopter and K9 units failed to turn up any signs of Salin. He is wanted on active warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated robbery.
Authorities told WREG the officer who was dragged was taken to Methodist University Hospital with an injury to his shoulders. He is expected to be okay.
