MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities are investigating two accidents involving school buses Tuesday morning.
A school bus collided with a car on Haleville and East Holmes Road.
There were 24 students on board the bus headed to Holmes Road Elementary, the school district said.
No injuries were reported at the scene, and the school is contacting families of all the students involved, according to the district.
It’s unclear what happened, but we do know a black four-door car suffered extensive damage to the front, and the roads were wet from the rain at the time of the accident.
“I don’t know what happened, but the people in the back was screaming,” said Braelyn Davison, a 4th grader on the bus. “I looked up, and the glass was broken.”
She said she and other classmates were distraught.
“People were running to the bus trying to get people off,” she said.
The bus barreled through two yards and had damage to the driver’s side. A tow truck had to be brought in to help wedge the bus out of the mud.
Witnesses claimed the driver of the other car involved was injured and terrified following the incident.
In another school bus accident Tuesday, 40 students were on board a bus headed to Bolton High School when it crashed. There were no injuries and the principal notified parents by phone.
A spokeswoman for Durham School Services said after each incident, students were checked out at the scene and then either released to their parents or taken to school.
She also highlighted the bus company’s emphasis on safety with its driver training: “Safety is our top priority and as such the drivers have been taken off their respective routes until they have completed classroom and behind-the-wheel refresher training.”
She said drivers received a minimum of 40 hours of training that includes driving in various weather conditions.
