MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A fight at Craigmont High lands five adults and three students in hot water.
The fight started at a nearby McDonald’s and ended in a hallway at Criaigmont High School.
WREG was told the individuals got into an argument at a nearby McDonald’s over comments made on social media. The altercation continued in the office at the school, resulting in Shelby County deputies calling for backup.
Five women and three female students are involved, but it is unclear if any of them are related.
The Sheriff’s Office says the fight started around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
A deputy who tried to break up the fight ended up getting a drink thrown on him.
Paul Williams has a granddaughter who attends Craigmont High School and can’t believe a fight like that would happen on campus. He isn’t surprised to hear that social media was to blame, however.
“We’ve got to be careful with what we say and how we handle social media,” said Williams. “Because it’s so easy now to get things interpreted the wrong way.”
The adults were arrested and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.
The students involved were issued juvenile summons, but it is unknown if they will be charged as well.
“Some adults need to act like adults,” said Williams. “Instead, they act like children.”
Antonia Kiles, a Memphis resident who lives close to the school, is particularly disappointed in the adults.
“So, if the adults had better control over the situation then they would probably do better,” said Kiles. “But of course, if some adults are jumping on somebody’s child, then they are going to jump in and fight. That is not a good idea.”
