(Germantown, TN) A sign warns drivers on Germantown Parkway that traffic jams Saturday are likely.

Nearly 16,000 people are expected to fill the streets of Germantown for the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

“We’re going to get out and do what we do best and that’s raise money for breast cancer,” said Race Chair Mollie Baltimore.

She says there is a plan in place to avoid the problems they faced last year with parking and shuttling people to the start line.

Some runners missed the 8:00am start time.

“This year the Germantown Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is working together to make sure parking is not going to be an issue,” she said.

Baltimore says there will be three different parking lots to catch a shuttle from, starting at 5:30am:

The parking lot for the Target in Germantown

The parking lot by the Macaroni Grill at Kirby Pkwy. and Poplar

The parking lot for the Shelby Showcase Arena

Baltimore says the lots will fill up quickly, but runners can always grab a parking spot on the street near the starting line.

“If you’re not on a shuttle at 7:15 a.m. you need to get back in your car and you need to go a little bit closer to where the start line and the race expo are,” said Baltimore.

Construction along Farmington has created a lot of headaches for drivers, but Baltimore said they’re not going to let it affect the race.

They’ve moved the starting line and changed the course to avoid it.

With problems fixed, Baltimore believes it’s going to be a good race for a good cause, “We want to be able to raise $500,000, just in donations and we’re at 50 percent of that goal right now.”
