MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A pregnant female was shot and killed in South Memphis, police said.
Officers responded to the 1900 block of Sparks, where they found the victim with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead.
Family members identified her as Karmeshia Pipes. She was 26 and was expecting a baby girl any day now, they said.
Her family thinks she may have been killed sometime last week because the last time they talked to her was last Sunday at her baby shower.
The victim’s older brother, Nathaniel Lee, tells WREG he’s shocked.
He says Pipes and her boyfriend seemed like the perfect couple.
But he knew something was wrong when he couldn’t get in touch with her.
“We have been trying to get in touch with her for about a week. We couldn’t get any word or any response from her. We knew there was something this morning when we we got the call. We found out she was deceased,” Pipes’ brother said.
Lee says his sister was a loving and caring person and she didn’t deserve to be killed.
“If you’re not happy, leave before it gets out of control. Men, if you can’t love a woman the right right way – let them go. Women, the same goes for you. If you can’t love that man the right way, let him go,” he said.
A male who knew the victim was detained. Family said he was Pipes’ boyfriend.
“From the old, to the small, to the young – the killing has to stop. It’s unnecessary. Why kill? You hurt a lot of people in the process,” Lee said. “Both families are hurt. He has a family, and I’m sure they’re hurt because they were actually excited about the baby.”
Police said the incident appeared to have stemmed from a domestic situation. They are continuing to investigate.
Hearts are broken and minds are scattered.
There’s still a looming question as to why this happened.
“We’ll never get a change to hold that baby. We can’t hold her, kiss her, touch her or play with her. So right now, it’s a hard time for us,” he said.
