MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 23-year-old man is accused of shooting at a group of kids and hitting two of them.
Thankfully, the two young girls are going to be okay, but it was a scary Wednesday night for people in the Nutbush neighborhood.
“I heard about at least three or four [gunshots],” said neighbor Jose Asua. “I thought it was coming from the back of my house, but it was just in front. It was just so crazy.”
He said he came outside to see a group of young girls and a boy.
Two of the girls had been shot — One of them hit on her thumb and a 12-year-old hit on her thigh.
“I put them up here on my porch,” said Asua. “I sat them down on this chair up here and we wrapped up her leg.”
Asua says he calmed them down as he called police.
They told him one of the girl’s older brothers got into an argument with them at a house down the street.
“I don’t know how it happened, but he just lost it.”
Detectives said Laquavis Campbell, 23, was the one who pulled the trigger.
They said he pushed one of the girls and then got a gun after one of the girls broke out his front window.
Police said when they got to the scene, the suspect’s door was open. They say Campbell was sitting inside and admitted to doing the shooting.
The people at the suspect’s home on Thursday didn’t want to comment.
“It was just, it was horrible,” said neighbor Margaret Stafford.
Stafford said her great grandkids were outside playing when the shooting took place.
“They were scared to death,” she said. “My granddaughters had three kids out here and they were all just falling up in the house.”
She’s thankful none of them were in the crossfire but still in disbelief this would happen.
“It’s so heartbreaking,” she said.
Neighbors said they take the bus to church every Sunday with suspect Campbell.
Police said they found a gun in his house after the shooting.
He’s charged with seven counts of aggravated assault and will be in court on Friday.
