TURRELL, Ark. — Rescuers said Friday that a body located in an Arkansas creek is that of 20-year-old Dequan Crawford.

Crawford’s body was located early Friday morning and law enforcement confirmed to WREG at 10 a.m. it is the young man, who apparently died when he drove off Interstate 55 and into a creek.

The body was found using sonar equipment, they said.

Authorities said it appears Crawford drove into Big Creek just south of Turrell city limits around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. He was driving home from his job in Memphis when his car left I-55 and landed in the creek.

According to the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in at 3:38 a.m. from a man who said his car was sinking in water and he didn’t know how to swim.

Rescuers pulled Crawford’s red Chevy Impala out of the creek by 5 p.m. Thursday, but Crawford wasn’t inside.

Thursday’s search wrapped up around 6 p.m.  but Crittenden County Sheriff Mike Allen said at the time search efforts would resume at 8 a.m. Friday with the assistance of a dive team arriving from Little Rock.

Crawford’s family believes weather may have contributed to this crash.

“Most likely ‘cause it was raining and so you never know ‘cause we don’t know everything that happened,” said his aunt Tarsha Ceaser.

“He’s just loving. Just a loving kid,” said Crawford’s mother Cynthia Holloway, who had texted him to be careful driving less than two hours before the crash.

The sheriff’s office along with Fish and Wildlife officers were searching for Crawford and his vehicle using sonar.

His family was on the scene, along with the mayor of Turrell, who knows Crawford.

“It’s hurtful, I mean, and then you really haven’t been given a clear answer as to what’s taken place,” said Mayor Dorothy Cooper.
