MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver of an SUV slammed into a police caution sign on the Interstate-55 bridge Monday morning, slowing down traffic for hours.

Investigators say no one was hurt— but it’s a reminder of the danger when drivers don’t move over.

Arkansas state police say a truck slammed into an electronic message sign that was left dangling over a barricade. They are working on the crash report, which will give more information about what happened and who is at fault.

Investigators spent Monday morning trying to piece together a timeline and find out who was at fault and why.

Meanwhile, the driver of the silver SUV grabbed her dog from the backseat.

She stood on the side of the road giving detectives her side of the story.

Charles Frazier, a crash investigator at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, said there are similar laws in place across the Mid-South to protect law enforcement and service vehicles.

In Tennessee, he told WREG the law states that, “you are required to change the lanes if it’s safe to do so, and if it’s not, you are required to slow down. Either one of those not followed, and you have potential to be fined up to $500 or even 30 days in jail.”

Given the recent rainy weather, Frazier said it’s even more vital to pay attention and leave plenty of room for law enforcement.

“Slow down, change lanes if you can. It’s not worth it,” he said.
