DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — One person is dead after a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler and three vehicles on Highway 61 near Star Landing Road, the Desoto County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.

Sheriff Bill Rasco told WREG three vehicles had stopped at a traffic light just before 2 p.m., when an 18-wheeler struck them from behind.

“There’s no skid mark from the tires or anything. He just hit them. I don’t even think he was looking ahead,” said motorist Gurtej Singh.

Two people were ejected from their cars, Rasco said, and one person died.

Four more victims were taken to a hospital.

A Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman said its investigation into the crash had just begun and didn’t know if the driver of the 18-wheeler would face any charges or be issued a citation.

WREG learned the 18-wheeler is registered to a Union City-based company called Big Binder Express.

Federal records show the company logged at least two other crashes in the last two years, but no fatal crashes were logged in that time frame until Monday.

The Highway 61 at Star Landing Road intersection, however, appears to be a hot spot for deadly crashes.

In November 2014, four people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and car.

In July 2014, an 18-wheeler struck and killed a bicyclist.

Singh thinks speed may be a problem on this stretch of highway.

“They need to go down probably like 50 to 55, something like that. The speed limit is way too high for this road,” he said.
