MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Police officer was critically injured after being hit by an alleged drunken driver Monday night.
Two officers were conducting a traffic stop near Frayser and Trezevant when one was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck around 11 p.m.
MPD identified the officer as Jeffrey Creighton, 35. Creighton has been with the department for nearly four years.
“The officer has some injuries that we’re concerned about, we’re trying to wrap around and support the family,” Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said.
The impact was reportedly so great that the officer’s shoe came off and was later located in the middle of the street.
Creighton was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Some 500 hundred feet away, the suspect, identified by police as Cleodis Davis, came to a stop.
” He went up about 30 feet. He stopped for a minute and looked, got out the car then he tried to drive off. The other officer got him,” witness Quenton Poole told WREG. Poole was a passenger in the vehicle that was stopped.
Davis was taken into custody. He was charged with DUI, vehicular assault, aggravated assault and driving with a suspended license.

Davis has been arrested previously on charges ranging from DUI to assault, speeding in a school zone, reckless driving and aggravated assault. He has a record dating back to 1993.
Davis’ employer, Brown’s Lawn Service, confirmed that Davis was driving a work vehicle without consent, but said he has been a good employee for more than 20 years.
No one answered the door to Davis’ home Tuesday.
