MEMPHIS, Tenn. — This weekend’s storms have caused quite a few problems, and MLGW is still working to get the rest of the power outages fixed.
Saturday’s storms forced more than 30,000 people to live without power.
Crews have been working to get that number down, but the constant weather change is not helping.
Carolyn Tate and her brother Raymond are disabled.
Raymond has difficulties talking, but explains how he and his sister both suffered from strokes years ago. “My first one was in 1999.”
As if doing the little things weren’t enough, the two have been without power for almost 48 hours – causing even bigger problems.
In order for them to move around, their wheelchairs need to be charged.
“I’m going to have to tote this battery charger all the way to the store,” Carolyn said.
With one functioning arm, Tate usually cooks for the two.
But since they have no power, their food in the refrigerator is becoming unsafe to eat.
“So after that goes bad, I’m going to have to throw that away and then there’s nothing to eat,”Carolyn said.
Carolyn says she called MLGW several times and was told they are doing the best they can.
Half of her apartment complex in Parkway Village has power, while the other half doesn’t and is possibly running off of a separate generator.
MLGW says power for more than 24,000 customers has been restored since the initial storms Saturday morning.
But as each moment passes, some who are still struggling without necessities can’t help but feel frustrated.
“I know you are working on it, because those lights are on. Why are these not on?” Carolyn said.
Crews are working to restore power around the clock.
They’ve even brought in 25 out of town crews to help and expect everyone to have power by Wednesday.
