Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis police say no charges will be filed in the deadly shooting Saturday morning near the FedEx hub in the airport area.

The victim’s name still hasn’t been released.

Police say the shooting happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Democrat Road and Tchulahoma Road.

One witness, who goes by the name MD-20, says he saw a shootout in the middle of traffic as the streets were packed with drivers, and nearly got caught in the crossfire.

I don’t know what it was over or nothing like that, but I had to speed up,” he said. “It could have been over an argument about he ran the light and ‘you did this, you did that.’ I don’t know.”

MD-20 was on his way to drop off a friend at the FedEx hub when he says he saw two guys start shooting at each other from their cars.

“I was almost coming right around the corner from it, like behind them, but when they was shooting, I just turned off. I wasn’t going that way,” he said. “I ain’t fixin’ to die out here playing games out here like that.”

A white Chevrolet at the crime scene was riddled with bullet holes, and police placed at least 12 evidence markers at the spots where they found shell casings.

The intersection was blocked off for hours, forcing drivers to turn around and find another route.

Laverne Cathy got stuck in the traffic but didn’t realize it was a deadly crime scene.

You hear so much. You just don’t know what’s going to happen next,” she said. “But you know what? We need to stay prayerful, ’cause God is truly in control. And with things like they are now, that’s just who we have to look to. It’s just everywhere.”

“It’s a senseless crime what be going on in Memphis, Tennessee, man. It don’t even have to go on,” MD-20 said.

Police haven’t released the victim’s name. They tell us they’ve detained one person, but no charges have been filed.

They have confirmed the two knew each other. According to police, the shooting was caused by an ongoing dispute.
