MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People in Memphis are stunned after hearing about the passing of Brian Lawler.
Most know him as Grandmaster Sexay, and the son of WWE Legend Jerry Lawler.
You don’t have to be a wrestling fan to know the name. In fact, you may walk right past it on Beale Street.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations says Lawler was found hanging in his cell at the Hardeman County Jail Saturday night.
Corrections officers tried to revive him, but it was too late.
Lawler died at Regional One Hospital surrounded by family Sunday afternoon.
He was booked into the Hardeman County Jail on July 7 on DUI charges, evading arrest and driving with a revoked license.
He appeared before a judge shortly after his arrest and was given a $40,000 bond . At that time, his family requested time to determine if they would hire their own attorney or allow a public defender to represent him.
The Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office said because he was famous, Lawler was placed into a call by himself. They did not believe he was a risk to himself so they did not place him on suicide watch.
WWE released a statement on Lawler’s passing that reads:
“WWE is saddened to learn that Brian Christopher Lawler, who is best known in WWE as Too Cool’s Grandmaster Sexay, has passed away. Lawler, who is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler, competed during the height of the Attitude Era. WWE extends its condolences to Lawler’s family, friends and fans.”
