MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people were critically injured Monday morning in a shooting at a motel on American Way.

Police say they responded at 10:30 a.m. for a shooting call at the Garden Inn & Suites at American Way and Lamar.

A male and female were taken to Regional One in critical condition.

LC Thomas says he heard the shots from his room.

“Everybody was scared. Everybody is scared when they hear gunshots. You’d be scared to if you heard some gunshots,” he said.

Police haven’t said what led up to the shooting.

Thomas says he doesn’t care to hear what caused it.

“I’m not worried about what goes on out here.” He’s been staying at the motel for a month and says what happened doesn’t scare him enough to leave.

“It could happen anywhere you go. It could have happened anywhere. I’m not going to be scared to come out of my room.”

Another occupant at the motel says she’s not too worried either.

“I go to work and don’t be around,” she said.

A woman who works in the area calls it a dangerous part of town and says the shooting doesn’t surprise her.

“It’s always devastating when something happens like that around here. I feel like it’s so common in this area.”

The suspect was described as a man with dreadlocks wearing a pink plaid shirt and blue jeans, but police did not say that an arrest had been made.
