Memphis, Tenn. — Two Memphis men have been arrested for a shooting that left a 6-year-old child in critical condition.
Jacquez Howell and Larry Perry were arrested Friday for a shooting that happened outside of the Goodwill Village apartments in August of 2018.
A 6-year-old boy was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He had to undergo several surgeries for his injuries.
The victim’s aunt told WREG that the victim was sitting in a car with his parents when the shooting happened.
The boy’s grandmother, who didn’t want to be identified, said she is relieved that the suspects are behind bars. One suspect is very familiar to her.
“I just can’t believe that he would do something like that because we know him, personally. May God be with you, that’s all I can say,” the grandmother said.
According to an affidavit obtained by WREG, Howell and Perry were developed as people of interest in the shooting. Witnesses were able to positively identify them in a six-person photographic line-up.
Both men have been charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. They are expected to be in court Monday morning.
The grandmother said she doesn’t wish any harm on the suspect she knows but hopes he thinks about what he did and who he hurt, even if it wasn’t intentionally.
Either way, her 6-year-old grandson had to go through something no child should.
“They put me in the chair and then back in the bed,” the 6-year-old said.
The little boy tells me his leg feels a lot better.
He’s had several surgeries and has a metal plate in his leg until his bone is able to grow back.
That means he will have to learn to walk all over again.
“He’s in a wheelchair. He has to progress from a wheelchair to a walker to be able to walk again,” the grandmother said.
Not only does his family think he needs counseling but also his younger sister.
She was in a state of shock while she sat right next to him during the shooting.
That’s why this grandmother is questioning everything but thanking God everyone survived.
“Where did this even come from to be that serious where you got people shooting in her car, hitting her baby, she’s pregnant. She get her car back, for us to discover that if she wasn’t so short she would’ve got shot in the head. Bullet.”
It’s unclear if the four counts of first-degree murder is an error or if they are connected to other incidents.
WREG reached out to police but they haven’t got back to us.
