MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two men have been charged following a high-speed chase that left several people injured on Friday.
Police said they charged Shymontre Reed, 19, with theft of property, auto theft and evading arrest. They also said Quandarius Richardson, 18, was in the truck. He was charged with theft of property, auto theft, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, no driver’s license and evading arrest.
Police said officers spotted the car – which matched the description of the vehicle used in the Phil Trenary murder – and tried to pull the driver over. The driver refused to stop and a high-speed pursuit began, they said.
The chase ended in a crash Friday morning near the intersection of McLemore and Mississippi Boulevard.
“We cannot confirm right now that individuals taken in custody are responsible for the shooting that happened [Thursday] night on South Front,” said MPD’s Lt. Karen Rudolph.
When the shooting of Trenary first occurred, police said the suspect had dreadlocks.
Police recommended Richardson be held on a $500,000 bond.
Richardson does not have a criminal background.
Reed has three prior run-ins with the law, including a felony arrest in August. Police said they saw someone pass a gun to Reed through the fence at Handy Park on Beale Street. When officers approached Reed, he fled, nearly causing a stampede on Beale Street, according to police.
A man who answered the door at Reed’s address said he did not have a comment. A neighbor vouched for the woman who lives there, who she identified likely as Reed’s grandmother.
“She’s a sweet lady. I love her to death. She takes care of my mother when I need her to. But as far as her family issues, I really don’t know anything about her family,” the neighbor said.
Both suspects are due in court for a video arraignment Monday morning.
