MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People hired to do work at a Berclair house are accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of items from the homeowner.
Kenneth Browning and Elizabeth Briscoe were arrested Sunday. They’re accused of stealing from a person who hired them to mow his lawn in Berclair.
Police say the pair broke into the house this past weekend and took $2,000, a laptop, a watch and a speaker. All the items together were worth more than $3,000.
The victim identified the couple on his surveillance video.
Neighbors who know Browning and Briscoe told us they weren’t surprised by the arrests.
Police say the pair has been living just feet away from the victim’s house in a neighbor’s garage. That’s also where officers reported finding the stolen laptop. It’s not clear if any of the other items were recovered.
Police say Briscoe admitted to planning and carrying out the crime with Browning. They’ve both been charged with burglary and theft.
We tried talking to the people who live in the home where they were staying, but no one came to the door.
