MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A late-night cruise with a friend could’ve turned deadly for Anthony Smith.

Smith was shot on Highway 385 near Ridgeway early Wednesday after he told police he heard 17 gunshots ring out.

Memphis Police responded to a shooting victim at Baptist East Hospital at 2:10 a.m. Police say Smith had been shot while driving east on 385 (Bill Morris Parkway).

He was in non-critical condition.

Smith told police he was in a car with a woman and was turning onto Ridgeway when the shooting happened. The gunfire may have come from the occupants of two dark-colored vehicles who were shooting at each other on 385, though he wasn’t sure.

Smith told officers he pulled over he felt a sharp pain in his arm and saw blood. He used a jacket to tie his arm to slow down the blood flow and rushed to the hospital.

Tracy Vaughn doesn’t know Smith, but she’s noticed how reckless drivers seem to be getting.

“It’s getting totally out of hand.”

The incident is the latest in a string of several shootings on Memphis-area interstates.
