MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 24-year-old man is charged with vehicular homicide and DUI for a crash that killed a pedestrian Saturday morning.

Police say Alex Walker hit and killed 30-year-old Nikki Harris around 1:30 a.m. on Mt. Moriah Road near Clarke Road, in Fox Meadows.

The woman’s body was still laying in the street when police got there, according to investigators.

“This is one of the busier intersections here in Memphis. Even in the late hours at night,” said driver Drexel Lewis. “You pretty much just have to drive for yourself and the next person… Just watch out and be prepared for the unexpected, if that’s at all possible.”

The arrest affidavit shows Walker hit Harris when she walked into his lane of traffic while trying to cross the intersection.

Investigators say Walker admitted to smoking marijuana about six hours before the crash, and later failed a drug test.

No one answered at Walker’s home when WREG stopped by Saturday morning, but neighbors say he lived with his parents.

“Very shocking. Yes, very shocking,” said one neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified. “It’s really sad. I feel sorry for his parents and the victim also.”

Another neighbor said she doesn’t know the family well, but that they’ve always been friendly.

“I think they’re nice people,” she said. “I’m sorry … because I don’t want to see nobody hurt and nobody in trouble.”

Walker doesn’t appear to have a previous criminal record in Shelby County.

Court records show he bonded out of jail Saturday.

He will face a judge Monday morning.

Police say they will release the victim’s name once her family has been notified.
