RED BANKS, Miss. — At least two people were killed and three more hospitalized when a train hit a vehicle east of Byhalia.
The accident happened Tuesday afternoon at North Red Banks Road and Frisco Lane.
Two people inside the vehicle were ejected. Both were killed, the coroner confirmed. They have been identified as Charity Mull, 27, and Brandon Deshawn Mosley, 27.
Both are from Memphis.
Bryan Bonnette lives less than a half-mile down the road. He says he’s witnessed several close calls with cars and trains that could’ve ended like this.
“People just fly through and blow through and run through the stop sign, ignore the stop sign. They’re not paying attention to what they’re doing.
Not only is speeding a problem on the 10 mile-per-hour road. Bonnette thinks there should be more warnings when a train is coming.
“There’s no siren, no arms. It’s literally that white railroad crossing those two lights. If it’s morning time or afternoon when the sun is flaring you’re not going to see it,” he said.
Kelly McMillen with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says, in this case, it’s still unclear what led up to the crash.
“We don’t know how fast the rain was going. From what I’m understanding though, the train had a video system set up on the front of the train so we gonna obtain that and see exactly what they saw at the time of the impact,” she said.
Deputies say they’re hoping to interview the surviving three witnesses to get their account on what happened.
The injured were taken to Regional One Hospital.
