BROOKHAVEN, Miss.— A Mississippi man has been charged with capital murder in the September shooting deaths of two police officers.

The Daily Leader reports 26-year-old Marquis Aaron Flowers appeared Tuesday in Brookhaven City Court and was charged in the killings of Brookhaven officers Zach Moak and James White.

A judge appointed an attorney for Flowers and set a Jan. 8 preliminary hearing.

The officers were killed Sept. 29 at a Brookhaven home, about 60 miles (95 kilometers) south of Jackson.

Investigators said Flowers was wounded in a gunfire exchange with Moak. Flowers was taken into custody the day of the killings and was hospitalized. He was discharged Oct. 17 and sent to a state prison. Records show he had previous burglary convictions.

Flowers’ attorney couldn’t immediately be reached after business hours Tuesday.
