MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A violent altercation at a grocery store reportedly led to an innocent bystander being rushed to the hospital after she was shot while holding her two -year-old child.
“I said, ‘Get down baby, get down.’”
Still shaken up, Anderson Donald told WREG what happened after he heard a crash outside their Whitehaven home Wednesday afternoon.
“All of the sudden, you heard chaos. ‘Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.’”
Donald told his family, including his fiancée, to get on the floor.
“It was a lot of gunshots, a lot of gunshots.”
When they finally stopped, he heard his fiancée call out to him.
“She said, ‘Baby help me. Don’t leave me.’ When I turned around and looked over there, blood was just… I ain’t been right since.”
A bullet had gone through their wall and hit her in the face. She was holding their 2-year-old son at the time.
“The blood drenched him.”
Donald’s pants were still stained with it the next day.
Police say it all started at the Save Mart a quarter of a mile down the street.
Around 2 p.m., police say Kemar Pride, 19, got into a physical fight with a woman in the mart parking lot.
It’s not clear if they knew each other, but he got in a car and left.
The woman then followed him to get his tag number. Police say Pride slammed his brakes, causing her to rear-end him. Pride then got out of the car and started shooting, according to MPD.
“I saw them out there and I heard them say, ‘Load them up. Load them up.’”
Pride was arrested shortly after the scene cleared.
Now, Donald’s family’s recovering from the violence. His six children, all 11 or younger, are scarred. His fiancée needs surgery.
“I just thank God for not taking her, for letting her live. We’ve got a lot ahead of us too.”
Donald said they’re now trying to find funds to move out of there.
Police say the car Pride was in turned out to be stolen. He’s been charged with attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, possession a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony, and theft of property.
