SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Southaven police are searching for a suspect after a woman was shot overnight near Baptist Hospital Desoto.

Southaven Police Captain Mark Little told WREG officers were dispatched to the area of Goodman Road and Southcrest Boulevard just before 2:30 a.m. Monday. That’s where they found a woman who had been shot through the driver’s side window.

Police say the woman had just exited off the interstate and made a right turn towards Walmart on Southcrest when she was hit by a bullet.

She was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis in critical condition.

It’s news that comes as a shock to James Henry.

“I’m very afraid of what has happened, because it never happens in this area,” he said. “I transport a lot of people, and I would hate to see someone get killed under my protection.”

A passenger in the SUV was not hurt.

The passenger, along with a witness, told police the suspect was reportedly driving a black Dodge Challenger or Charger with tinted windows, and fled the scene heading north on Airways Boulevard.

Southaven Police Chief Mark Little said it’s unclear if the suspect and victim knew each other or if this was a random incident.

“We don’t know if it’s random. They were leaving some areas in south Memphis. I believe they had been somewhere. I’m not sure if it was a restaurant or what,” Mark Little, with the Southaven Police Department, said.

Police said they are checking videos from nearby businesses in the hopes of catching the suspect on camera.
