(WHNT) As Hobby Lobby continues its fight against a provision in the Affordable Care Act, many supporters are planning to join a nationwide shop-in event tomorrow.
The event is called “Standing With Hobby Lobby” and information is posted on Facebook.
Many of the store’s supporters pledge to shop at Hobby Lobby stores on Saturday, January 5 to show their support for the company.
The company said it is thankful for the support, and issued this statement about the social media movement.
“We are aware that many of our customers have named Saturday January 5th “Support Hobby Lobby” day. We appreciate all of our customers and look forward to serving everyone that will be shopping in one of our over five hundred stores.”
The craft store giant continues to fight a provision in the Affordable Care Act which requires companies to pay for the so-called ‘morning-after pill’, and ‘week-after pill’ which are designed to prevent pregnancy.
A Hobby Lobby spokesperson said the company has no objection to preventive birth control.
“The Green family has no objection to preventive birth control, and they will continue to cover this in their comprehensive health insurance plan for their employees,” said Mandi Broadfoot in a YouTube video explaining the company’s position.
“Hobby Lobby and the Green family do not wish to control the actions of their employees, nor do they want to impose their beliefs on anyone,” Broadfoot added. “They respect the religious convictions of all Americans, even those with different views.”
Hobby Lobby lost the latest round of its lawsuit.
On December 26, 2012, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor rejected an emergency request for an injunction for the company to be temporarily exempt from the provision until the full Supreme Court hears the case.
The next day, Hobby Lobby announced it would defy the mandate, which took effect January 1, 2013.
Hobby Lobby faces stiff fines for this decision.
