MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead and another in police custody after a shooting in North Memphis.
Officers responded to the 1500 block of Carpenter at 11:45 Sunday night and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the suspect is a neighbor named Tony Evans, 49, who reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
Out of an abundance of caution, officers evacuated homes near the scene and secured the area Monday. They then searched both homes for the suspect, but concluded that the suspect was not at either location.
Evans turned himself in, police reported just after 1 p.m. Monday.
We spoke to a woman who says Evans is her sister’s boyfriend. She says police think Evans shot his neighbor after an argument.
Another neighbor told us he’s upset the violence happened in his neighborhood. “The crime needs to stop. Everybody on our street really needs to come together and get a neighborhood watch,” he said.
On March 24 one person was killed and two were injured in a shooting at Hyde Park, which is about a mile away from Carpenter.
