Drivers in Mississippi may be paying more for gas because of a push by the Mississippi Department of Transportation to raise the state’s gas tax for the first time in 25 years.
Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall wants lawmakers in Mississippi to increase the current tax by 10-cents, raising it from 18-cents a gallon to 28-cents a gallon.
Hall said the current tax is out of date and the hike would bring in more than $200 million a year that could be used to make repairs and maintenance on Mississippi highways.
