MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Eleven officers and the intake area of the Shelby County jail were decontaminated after fentanyl was discovered on a man being booked in the jail.
Eleven Shelby County Sheriff’s Office employees (one deputy sheriff and 10 corrections officers) needed to undergo decontamination. The SCSO said Memphis Fire made the scene and decontaminated the intake area.
The SCSO announced the contamination around noon Thursday.
The deputy sheriff was taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition. The other 10 deputies were later also taken to the hospital as a precaution after undergoing decontamination.
All 11 deputies were released from the hospital later in the day Thursday.
The main intake area was closed but reopened around 1:30 p.m. after decontamination.
The SCSO said additional charges are expected against the man who was being booked, 38-year-old James Hubbard.
