ALAMO, Tenn. — The Crockett County property assessor has been arrested for allegedly attacking Crockett County Mayor Gary Reasons at his office.
George Walter Yearwood III was taken into custody Wednesday morning and charged with aggravated assault.
The Alamo Police Department and the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fight call at the mayor’s office around 9:30 a.m. The arrest affidavit states that Yearwood grabbed Reasons by the throat with both hands, shoved him against a wall and threatened to kill him. It doesn’t give a reason why.
“Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable that such a thing could happen in Crockett County,” said Crockett County resident Carolyn Martin.
“As far as I knew, everybody got along fine, but apparently not,” said Juanita Cates.
When WREG stopped by Yearwood’s home, the people inside quickly closed the blinds and wouldn’t answer any questions.
Reached by phone, Reasons declined to comment except to say, “Everything’s fine and quieted down.”
Yearwood has been the property assessor in Crockett County since 2012. He’s up for re-election in 2020.
Reasons, an independent, has been the mayor since 2010 and is up for re-election in 2022.
“I’m really not happy about living in a town where people act like this, grown people act like this,” said Cates.
Yearwood will be arraigned in nearby Gibson County at 9 a.m. Thursday.
