MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis municipal election is just a few days away and an advertisement is causing confusion among voters.
The Shelby County Democratic Party is asking a judge to grant a temporary restraining order against two organizations to stop producing and distributing an advertisement endorsing candidates.
Michael Harris, chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party says this mailer claims to be the only official Memphis Democratic party.
He says that’s what is causing confusion among Memphians looking for guidance during elections.
Harris says they are asking a judge to grant a temporary restraining order against Memphis Democratic Club run by Latroy Williams and the Greater Memphis Democratic Club.
He says both organizations’ ads have the Democratic logo but includes candidates that are already endorsed by the Shelby County Republican Party.
“We’ve received an abundance of calls from concerned voters questioning the authenticity of this ballot wanting to know if the Shelby County Democratic Party had endorsed Republican candidates,” Harris said.
Harris said the Shelby County Democratic Party is not endorsing any candidate this election and any publication claiming to be a list of Democratic endorsements is misleading.
We tried calling the number listed on the Greater Memphis Democratic Club Facebook page for answers, but it didn’t work.
The Oct. 3 city election is nonpartisan. Early voting ended Saturday.
