HORN LAKE, Miss. — Police shot and killed a man who authorities say shot his wife in a Horn Lake house Tuesday morning, officials said.

The shooting happened just before 8 a.m. on Winterwood Drive.

District Attorney John Champion said a child between the age of 10 and 13 called police at 7:45 saying his or her father had shot the child’s mother.

When Horn Lake officers arrived, negotiators got the man to come out of the house.

He came out of the house with a gun, Champion said, and would not comply with officers’ demand to drop the weapon. Police said he was acting erratically.

“We watched him come outside with a gun. He walked around the yard for a little bit,” said Kristopher Dexter, neighbor who witnessed the incident. “They were just telling him to think about his kids and that they need a father. Just stuff like that.”

One officer fired one shot, killing the man, Champion said.

The woman who was shot was taken to Regional One and was in critical condition at last check.

There were three children in the house. They were not physically hurt. Champion did not say where they were being taken but said they are safe.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will handle the case, officials on the scene said.

Dexter lives across the street, and said the couple had issues with domestic violence in the past.

“We fell out of contact because he was really controlling, but they used to come over here all the time,” Dexter said.

He said he had seen things become violent, but never imagined this.

“Like years ago he tried to hit her with the car into the carport, and then other than that, a few months ago, when he got called for domestic violence,” Dexter said. “They called police a couple times.”

Neighbors now hoping for healing for the children and their mother.

“I am praying that they come through,” neighbor Joshua Cason said. “I’m praying that she comes through. I hope that she’s alright because I know it’s hard already losing one parent but two at the same time. That’s hard.”
