(MEMPHIS) Shelby County School Board members are seeking a $145 million to run the new combined district. Board Members met in a specially called meeting to hammer out details of how much money to ask County Commissioners for, to fund the new district.
Superintendent John Aitken and his staff presented a budget with numerous cuts, asking for $65 million dollars. But parents, teachers, and principals objected to the idea of any cuts to classroom instruction.
Board members began talking about building a world-class district, and point to budget amounts passed in Nashville and other cities who combined their districts.
At one point there was a discussion of asking for as much as $300 million.
The final vote $145 million, and many board members left disappointed with the outcome saying it was pie in the sky.
